Web Page Development Extras Descriptions

Note: Prices are maintenance prices for updating websites after completion. New websites are generally priced based on package deals. The prices shown here are indicative of costs associated for the work, and therefore are guides for what maintenance prices can be. Other bits of handy information can be found on this page.

Page Layout and Design - The actual work of deciding how a particular page will look (not the same as implementing the page into the overall design).  $20-$200, depending on complexity.  Generally speaking, additional (simple) pages when ordered with the original design are $50-200 each, depending on amount of content.  Complex page designs could go much higher ($400-$800).  After the website has been in operation, new page designs and layout start at $200 at the minimum, but can go up quite a bit depending on the complexity of the layout (time intensive).  You will always save on page designs and layout when those pages are planned for at the original design of the overall website.

An addition expense is incurred to get that page integrated into the existing website:

If the page is a replacement design and layout for an existing page, it depends on whether the page's purpose remains the same or changes.  If the purpose changes, then links to the old page will need to be re-labeled.  Those changes may affect only a few pages, or it could affect all pages.  The Site Map page will need to be changed.  Also, footer links may need to be re-labeled (depending on whether the old labeled link has already been included, or whether the new page needs to be added).  Also, if the page purpose changes, any pages that will need to link to that page will need to be modified.  All those changes are time oriented, then testing needs to be performed for the new design.  Basically, the costs are dependent upon the time necessary to design, layout, and implement the new page design.  The costs shown here are generic; the actual costs are more dependent upon other things, such as costs incurred in image manipulation, text processing, type of programming used in implementation, etc.  You can see specific examples of these costs below.  There are many other "Extras" that can be added to a page that can affect the price.  There are many examples of these below as well.  Again, it is always better to plan for a good overall design at the initial design of a website.
Adding Photos - The actual work of starting with a photo image, either print or digital, then doing all the work necessary to get the image ready for the website, then implementing the photo into a webpage (see graphics work below for specific pricing).  $100-$?, depending on complexity.  Generally speaking, adding a photo when ordered with the original design are $40-300 each, depending on amount of work necessary to get the image web ready.  Complex graphics manipulation could go much higher ($400-$1,000).  After the website has been in operation, new photos start at $120 at the minimum, but can go up quite a bit depending on the complexity of the graphics work necessary, and how it is implemented into an existing page layout (time intensive).  You will always save on page designs and layout (including where photos are placed) when those pages are planned for at the original design of the overall website.

Graphics manipulation:

The work involved could include scanning if starting from a print.  Once the image is in digital form, the image may need color corrections, brightness, contrast, saturation, color levels, restoration, watermarking, labeling, text overlays added, cropping, resizing, creating multiple sizes, and several other graphics image specific manipulations.

JavaScript - Adds new capabilities, several fancy additions to web pages.  We have other examples of JavaScript such as the status bar messages.  JavaScript also allows for easy manipulation of image displays such as blending, switching, etc.

Translation - Each page can be translated to one of 5 languages (Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese).  This allows you to attract customers that normally would not bother.

Create Excel Spreadsheets - If you need interactive data, you can use an Excel Spreadsheet to allow users to alter data, and see instant results.

Create PDF file - (Portable Document Format) This allows you to preserve typeface appearance and layout that will be displayed the same regardless of the user's typefaces available.*  The typefaces used must have the ability to be embedded (most Windows supplied and Adobe supplied typefaces allow embedding).  The files are read by Acrobat Reader, and can be printed on the end user's printer.  When the PDF file is a link as part of a web page, Adobe Acrobat starts up automatically when the link is clicked on.  Adobe Acrobat is available as a free download from Adobe.  Most users have the Reader already installed.  It is supplied with most browser installs.

Backgrounds - The image or color that shows behind the text and graphics displayed on the page.  The possibilities are endless.  Depending on the page content, you may wish to not have a background.  There is an enormous range of colors as solid colors to start out with.  Beyond that, with graphics, there is no limit.

Scan Images - Digital scans.  Starting from a regular photograph or image, we can convert to the format that can be used.

Original Typeface Designs - If you need a truly unique appearance, we can create a typeface that is used only on your site.  You should consider making it available for download so users can take advantage of it.  You can also use the typeface to create text as graphics so that users can see the same typeface without downloading the typeface file.

Decorative/Original Buttons - Your own series of buttons that match your website's look and feel.

Decorative/Original Icons - Your own series of icons that match your website's look and feel.  These icons are used when someone adds your website as a favorite (or bookmarks your site).

Pages with Frames - Add $20/page/frame
Cascading Style Sheets - CSS is used for specifying how pages are formatted, text size, color, etc.  A global change in the CSS can affect the entire page or even multiple pages without making any changes to the text itself.  CSS allows for several additional capabilities.  For instance, it allows links to change color when the mouse is moved over it.  For example, our website links change from blue to red.  Also, the scrollbars's color can be specified.  We can match any colors on your website.  Our pages are the samples.  You might also want to see a detailed view of the scroll bar color choices.

Page Counter - Allows you to count the number of visitors to your website.  Most websites display the number as a badge of honor since they have sufficient traffic to brag about.  Small sites starting out might embarrass themselves.  Most larger sites don't bother. 

Several resource sites offer a free counter, and collect statistics in exchange for getting to share the statistics.  They will then start sending you and all of your visitors junk mail, both postal service type and e-mail.

Button Clock - A real time clock as something extra.  The clock time is also updated on the status bar of the page.  If you click on the clock, it will display the number of milliseconds since January 1st, 1970, and tell you how long you have been on this page. The clock and text can be any color.

Sub sites (i.e., http://www.yourdomain.com points to https://www.gcsrss.com/www/yourdomain) - $5.95/year / $10.95 setup (this service does not include e-mail addresses or any other plan features specific to the parent website)
Web Maintenance Fees - Hourly and Maintenance Contracts
Authentication Services - A thwart again criminals.
Browser Compatibility Check services. - Periodic checks of your website's "appearance" to ensure that it works well regardless of browser and computer combination.

Cost varies depending on size of website.  I use a service company's product to perform the tests.  The base cost is $150 per year per URL to use their product.  In addition, I must charge for the service to perform the tests, and review the results.  Depending on the design of your site, it may not work for all browsers and computers; you must decide if you wish to remove any incompatibilities or not.  If you wish to take advantage of some techniques available in the newer browsers, understand that the same page may not display properly in other browsers/computer parings.  The timed rate is $60/hour to perform the tests, and review the results.
